How does this program differ from others? Back to Top
The Davis method approaches dyslexia as a gift, not a disease or malfunction of the brain. It is a non-medication program and does not rely on repetition or drill. The Davis method does not rely on instruction based on phonics because dyslexics are picture thinkers and have difficulty thinking with sounds and words. This program addresses the problems of learning disabilities at the root and corrects them using the natural talents and abilities of the individual.
What does the program involve? Back to Top
The first step is an assessment to discover if the program is right for the client and to determine the goals the client would like to achieve. The program has two main parts. The first is giving the client the tools to be oriented (have correct and accurate perception). This is done through imaginative and kinesthetic exercises. Next, we eliminate confusing “triggers” in the alphabet, print styles, punctuation and trigger words using Symbol Mastery, which gives the client 3-dimensional pictures to think with while reading and writing. Support training follows on the last day for parents, teachers, or other individuals who will be helping the client continue using Symbol Mastery to master the 220 abstract trigger words.
What comes after the program? Back to Top
The client should complete the entire trigger word list using Symbol Mastery, which can usually be done in tutoring sessions or at home over the course of several months. Included in the cost of the program are up to three follow-up visits as needed for review, unlimited phone consultations, and a Student Symbol Mastery Kit.
Can this program cure dyslexia? Back to Top
No. Dyslexia is not a disease to be cured or a deformity or malfunction of the brain.
Does the program help with other learning disabilities? Back to Top
Yes! The Davis program addresses reading issues as well as dysgraphia (handwriting difficulties), dyscalculia (problems with math), ADD or ADHD (attention deficit disorder), problems with coordination and balance, auditory perception deficits, and problems with order and time.
What effects can be expected from the program? Back to Top
Expect to see positive changes in the self-esteem of the client in the first day or 2. Though results may vary from client to client based upon their individual goals, it is not uncommon to see improvements in reading 1 to 2 grade levels by the end of the week. There is usually a marked difference in the client’s overall learning abilities by the last day of the program. Further progress is based upon the client’s continued motivation and determination to carry on with Symbol Mastery after the program. The client may also see improvements in coordination, time management, and listening skills.
Who can receive this program? Back to Top
Adults or children at least 8 years old who have the gift of dyslexia. The client must be eager, willing and motivated to complete the program and the follow up work for their own achievement and benefit and not to please someone else. The client must be willing to work hard and have lots of fun!
